Privacy at Pacific Bay
This page explains what happens to information about you when you read Pacific Bay or write to us. The short version: we collect very little, we do not track you around the site or across the web, and we only keep what we need to run the site and answer messages.
Plain pages, nothing watching
Pacific Bay is built as a set of static pages. There are no user accounts, no comment system, no newsletter sign-up and no forms that send data to a database. We do not run analytics software, advertising scripts, social media widgets or tracking pixels, and we do not build profiles of readers. Nothing you do on the site is sold or shared with data brokers.
Your cookie choice
When you first visit, a notice asks whether you accept cookies. Whatever you pick is written to local storage in your browser, which keeps the notice from popping up again as you read on. That small entry stays on your device, is not sent to us and is not used to recognise you. Deleting the stored data for pacific-bay.com in your browser settings erases it on the spot. The cookies page covers this in more detail.
Server logs
Like every website, Pacific Bay is delivered by a hosting provider whose servers record basic technical information when a page is requested. These logs typically include the IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the browser type and the referring address. They are used to deliver pages, keep the service secure and diagnose faults. The hosting provider processes this data on our behalf, keeps it for a limited period and does not use it to profile visitors. We do not combine log data with any other information.
When you email us
If you write to office@pacific-bay.com, we receive your email address, your name if you include it and whatever you put in the message. We use this only to read and answer your email and, if you report an error, to correct the article concerned. Messages are kept for as long as the conversation is useful and are then deleted, usually within a year. We never add your address to a mailing list and never pass it on to anyone else, unless the law requires it.
Please do not send passwords, bank or card details, identity documents or health information. Nobody on the desk has any reason to request them.
Links to other websites
Articles occasionally point to outside websites. The moment you click through, that operator's privacy rules take over, and whatever it gathers is outside our reach.
Legal basis
Where data protection law such as the GDPR applies, we process server log data on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website, and we handle emails on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering the people who contact us.
Your rights
Data protection law in many countries, the GDPR among them, may entitle you to:
- find out whether we hold anything about you, such as an old email thread, and get a copy of it;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data deleted;
- object to or restrict how we process it;
- take your data with you as a common, machine-readable file;
- raise a complaint with the regulator that oversees data protection where you live.
Requests of this kind go to the office address given earlier on this page. We may need to ask a question or two to confirm that a request really comes from you, and we will reply within the time limits the law sets.
Children
The site is written for adults and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age at which they can consent to data processing where they live.
Changes to this page
If the way the site works changes, for example if we ever added a feature that handles personal data, we will update this page first and change the date below. Questions about privacy can go to the same inbox as everything else; the contact page has the details.
